Divine Happy School Bhagalpur — 35 Years of CBSE Excellence — Our Story
Founded by two educators who believed Bhagalpur deserved better — and spent thirty-five years proving it.
Divine Happy School began on January 21, 1991, in a single building with roughly 200 students. Its founders — Sri Mathura Kumar and Smt. Droupadi Devi — were not businesspeople entering education. They were teachers. Veteran educators who had spent their careers in classrooms and believed that Bhagalpur needed an institution built on a simple principle: that discipline, values, and rigorous academics could coexist, and that a school built on this foundation would outlast any trend.
The neighbourhood around Chatrapati Talab Road was sparse in those days — the school didn't arrive in a thriving locality. Over the decades, the area developed around it. The school shaped its students, its teachers built careers within its walls, and the community around it grew as the institution's reputation drew families to the area. It is one of the rare cases where an institution didn't just serve a neighbourhood — it helped build one.

A single building, 200 students, no board affiliation, and two founders who were teachers first. For eighteen years, the school operated without the backing of any national board — earning the trust of Bhagalpur's families purely on the strength of what happened inside its classrooms.
In 2009, everything changed. The school earned CBSE affiliation up to Class X — a milestone that validated nearly two decades of work done without any board's name behind it. That first CBSE batch sent 30 students into the world. Class XII followed in 2013, bringing a second academic block. By 2019, a third block was added for the youngest learners. Each of these buildings was raised under one man's watch: Dr. Gopal Krishna Kunwar.
1,700+ students. 70+ faculty. Three academic blocks on a campus that Dr. Kunwar built from the ground up. eVidya 2.0 integrating classroom and home learning. Over the past three and a half decades, more than 10,000 students have been shaped within these walls, and over 300 teachers have built their careers here. What began as a single building and a conviction now serves an entire community.

Dr. Gopal Krishna Kunwar
Every building on the Divine Happy School campus exists because of one person. Dr. Gopal Krishna Kunwar was not an architect or an engineer — he was an educationist, driven by an unwavering conviction that the right learning environment could shape generations. He took it upon himself to design the campus, supervise every phase of construction, and ensure that each block was purpose-built for the students who would fill it.
What makes this remarkable is that no one asked him to do it. There was no construction firm, no external project manager. He did it because he believed that if the school was going to stand for something, it had to stand — physically — on a foundation built with that same care.
Dr. Kunwar's three-decade stewardship of the campus came to a close on May 13, 2021.

Dr. Anita Kunwar has shaped more students at Divine Happy School than any other person. She served as Principal for over three decades — from the school's founding in 1991 through 2023 — overseeing every batch, every exam cycle, every campus milestone from the inside. She now serves as Managing Trustee, ensuring the school continues to scale new heights while staying anchored to the values it was built on.

Ms. Manisha Madhushree took over as Principal in 2023, carrying forward a school with a thirty-two-year track record and a clear identity. Her focus has been on sustaining the academic rigour and disciplinary values that have defined DHS since its founding — the standards that parents have come to expect and that the school's reputation is built on.

School Motto — Service to Humanity
Structure and consistency — in the classroom, on the field, and in how students carry themselves. Not rigidity, but the kind of self-governance that serves them long after school.
Doing what is right when no one is watching. Character is built in small daily choices, and the school treats this as seriously as any academic subject.
Education is not only for personal advancement. The school's founding motto asks every student to look beyond themselves and contribute to something larger.
